Elizabeth Kulhanek – Editor

Editor with 8+ years of experience working on bestselling and award-winning fiction and nonfiction at a Big 5 publishing company

Overview

After a decade of editorial experience, I still find there’s nothing more rewarding than being part of bringing a creative vision to life, and helping a story evolve from a fledgling idea to a polished manuscript to a finished book.

During my 8+ years at Grand Central Publishing (the largest division of Hachette Book Group, a Big 5 publishing company), I had the pleasure of working on bestselling and acclaimed books by world-class authors, such as David Baldacci, Octavia E. Butler, Min Jin Lee, Scott Turow, Harlan Coben, Sandra Brown, Nicholas Sparks, Admiral William H. McRaven, M.C. Beaton, Leesa Cross-Smith, Kira Jane Buxton, and Melinda Taub, among many others. Whether a writer is an up-and-coming talent or a #1 New York Times bestselling author, I take great joy in working with them at every stage in their career and in their books’ life cycles, from editorial review to developmental edits and beyond.

Within my fiction focus, I gravitate toward commercial, upmarket, fantasy, speculative, thrillers, and rom-coms. Don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d love to hear about your next project and how I can help it along its journey!

From her response to my request for a quote, Elizabeth has demonstrated that she knows her craft, cares about the writer she works with, and makes herself available whenever there are questions. I had the pleasure of hiring her to review and line-edit the first three chapters of my manuscript for submission to acquiring agents and editors. I was more than amazed and impressed with how she helpe...

It was a pleasure working with Elizabeth. In particular, her experience and advice about how to select comps and position my novel within genres and audiences was valuable, and I also valued her kindness and the gentle touch of her critiques. She was quick and responsive and provided well-written, timely communication. Great job!

Elizabeth did not disappoint! She had the uncanny ability to bring valid considerations to light in my writing, while at the same time making me feel like the next Bonnie Garmus. She was detailed, thoughtful, and insightful. Her multiple page report letter and comments throughout the manuscript gave me a blueprint for the rewrite. Her suggestions prompted ideas to bring my writing to the next ...

Elizabeth's review of my query letter was incredible. With both line edits and a review letter, I knew exactly what to do next. Nothing was vague. Instead, she offered specific edits. Elizabeth was not the cheapest (or most expensive) of the proposals I received, but she was worth every penny. "You get what you pay for." I received invaluable help and comps for pitching my manuscript. I've had ...

I reached out to Elizabeth after working with her first last fall, when she gave me a phenomenally helpful editorial assessment of my novel. Again, I am so pleased. Anything I say here cannot adequately convey how happy I am to have found her. Elizabeth's feedback is invaluable--substantive and critical in just the ways that I need and crave, while also giving me an encouraging boost (which is ...
