Elizabeth Chadwick

Elizabeth Chadwick – Editor

Experienced nonfiction editor with 10+ years editing international bestsellers; I specialize in tech, computing, STEM, and memoirs

Overview

I'm a development editor, copyeditor, and copywriter with more than ten years experience in a range of areas from technical computing and programming texts to trade science books to children's fiction.

My particular expertise lies in developing specialized manuscripts into accessible books that engage with a wide readership. I've edited several international bestsellers, including Python Crash Course, the bestselling programming title worldwide; Bayesian Statistics the Fun Way, a fun and friendly introduction to an otherwise complex statistics topic and international bestseller; The Rust Programming Language, the offical documentation for the Rust language, developed with Mozilla; and Lauren and the Jargonauts, a children's fiction book that also teaches the basics of computational thinking.

I can help you craft your nonfiction text into an accessible, practical book that teaches the reader exactly what they want to know (and more!). I can also help you hone your fiction and biographies, matching your voice while offering style and accuracy improvements. For anyone who has finished a book and wants it represented to the fullest of its potential, I write dynamic copy that has helped sell hundreds of thousands of copies of books globally, whether it be for your first novel or a how-to manual on coding video games. I have a Creative Writing degree from the University of Anglia.

If you have a finished book and want help getting it picked up by a publishers, I also offer proposal consultation services based on my 10+ years experience evaluating and helping craft publication-worthy proposals.

Work experience

No Starch Press

Feb, 2015 — Aug, 2022 (over 7 years)

• As a development editor, I developed specialized manuscripts into accessible, high-quality books; developed ideas into viable proposals; edited line-by-line for style and clarity; implemented high-level conceptual edits. Many of my titles became worldwide bestesellers in their fields.

• I also wrote copy for covers, websites, sales materials, and press release. I researched markets, competitors, and the field at the center of the title, and wrote copy that presented the books in accessible, appealing, and above all accurate ways.

• I am proficient at working in a variety of formats, including Word, Google Docs, odt, markdown, and LaTeX.

Notable publications:
Python Crash Course, Eric Matthes—the bestselling title in its field worldwide, developed.
Linux Basics for Hackers, OccupyTheWeb—bestseller, acquired and developed.
Bayesian Statistics the Fun Way, Will Kurt—bestseller, acquired and developed

Oxford University Press

I got lucky with Elizabeth as she had edited a few other books on the same topic I wrote about. I skipped senior English in high school, am an engineer by education and not a writer so I can imagine how many times she may have rolled her eyes but that's why I came to Reedsy. We had a slow start as hand injuries she had required hospitalization and multiple delays had to be implemented. But life...

Liz was incredible and really helped polish my book. The topic is in a very technical space and they asked great questions, gave constructive and actionable feedback, and the final product is leagues beyond what it started with. Highly recommended!

Anton was a wonderful collaborator; easy to communicate with, clear in what he wanted, and very understanding when I had to delay a little due to injury. He's also written a killer book.
