Dylan Garity

Dylan Garity – Editor

Full-service freelance editor, specializing in genre fiction. Over 300 books edited, including many NYT and USA Today bestselling titles.

Overview

I am a freelance editor with over ten years of experience working with fiction and non-fiction titles. After graduating from Macalester College with a B.A. in English and creative writing, I began editing, and have since worked on more than 300 books, including multiple bestselling titles, for both self-published authors and traditional publishers.

As an avid reader and writer since childhood, I love diving into a book and helping get it in shape so that readers can experience the story without any distractions. My favorite genres to work with are thriller/mystery, sci-fi and fantasy, and literary fiction, but I enjoy working with books of pretty much any kind.

In addition to my freelance work, I also served for over six years as Vice President of Button Publishing, Inc., publishers of popular poetry and non-fiction titles such as Our Numbered Days, Helium, and Depression and Other Magic Tricks.

Simply put, Dylan is terrific. He guided me through the development edit and, in my opinion, saved the book. After several months of rewriting, I hired him to do both line-editing and proofreading. Again terrific. He caught inconsistencies, corrected grammar and pinctuation, suggested where I needed more, and warned me when my writing was "too much on the nose." I highly recommend him and look ...

Dylan presented me with a professional copy-edit that clearly made my writing shine. His changes were not only precise, but I also learned a bunch from his comments and editing choices. He managed to remain consistent to my writing style, which resulted in a marked improvement on my text. I fully recommend his editing work.

Dylan has been a real godsend for me. Not only was he swift in his communication, but open, understanding, and friendly. I hired him to edit my (first) book, and not only was he effective in that respect (even turning it in early), he also gave me developmental notes that I hadn't expected, but very much welcomed. As much as I'm bummed I need to go back and do some hefty rewriting, ultimate...

Dylan was fantastic to work with! I would absolutely work with him again. His insights were invaluable, and I have a clear direction for what needs to change to make the manuscript shine. He even took time to answer all my questions. Working with him was like a crash course in writing; I've read multiple craft books and taken online courses, but the edits and advice from working one on one with...
