Connolly Bottum

Connolly Bottum – Editor

Former HarperCollins editor specializing in editorial assessments and developmental edits for young adult, middle grade, and romance novels.

Overview

Prior to freelancing, I worked as an in-house editor at HarperCollins for nearly five years. At the beginning of my time with the company, I edited romance novels for Harlequin Intrigue, Love Inspired, and Love Inspired Suspense before later becoming an editor for Inkyard Press, a children’s imprint of HarperCollins, which gave me the opportunity to edit many wonderful young adult and middle grade novels. I am proud to say that books I edited have won awards, become Indie Next picks, and been selected for several subscription book boxes, including OwlCrate, The Bookish Box, and Beacon Book Box, among others.

I specialize in editorial assessments and developmental edits since my favorite part of the editorial process is helping authors to ensure their story structures are as strong as possible. I love exploring new fantastical worlds and inviting authors to consider how they can make their contemporary settings feel more realistic, and I adore the puzzle-like process of figuring out how a novel could feel more cohesive and engaging.

I was raised in San Francisco but later moved to the East Coast to attend Amherst College, where I received a BA in Psychology and English with a concentration in Children’s Literature. I now live in New York City with my Chihuahua mix, Jasper.

I look forward to hearing from you!

I've grown as a writer thanks to Connolly, and I would eagerly work with her in the future!" —Mara Rutherford, author of The Poison Season, Luminous, and the Crown of Coral and Pearl duology

Connolly did a great job of listening and understanding what my expectations were for the project. Among many things, she pointed out areas that needed to be fledge out, asking valid questions when necessary about characters and their motives. The experience so far has been very valuable. I look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.

Connolly provided invaluable feedback on my manuscript. She is skilled at bringing out the feelings in a scene and finding places where a story needs to be fleshed out. She's also kind and encouraging which is important for beginning writers. Choosing her to edit my writing was money well spent!

Connolly was absolutely wonderful to work with. Her valuable insight was exactly what I was looking for and well worth the investment. Her perspective helped me see things in a different way and allowed me to see my blind spots. She was able to offer insight to make the story more compelling and the characters more dimensional so the story can really stand off the page and connect well with rea...

Connolly's feedback was straightforward, easy to follow, and just GOOD. I had struggled to make my beginning work for a long, long time. Connolly pinpointed a few major issues that had gone over my head, and her feedback makes so much sense. She also provided a wonderful solution that I am excited to try. Overall, I'm very happy and would love to work with her again.
