Christopher Impiglia

Christopher Impiglia – Editor

A creative developmental and copy editor specializing in art books (catalogues, monographs, surveys, etc.).

Overview

I'm a versatile editor specializing in art books and the art-related short form. This includes essays, bios, and copy. Catalogues, monographs, and surveys I've worked on have been published by DESTE Foundation; Haus de Kunst; Karma; Konig; Jeu de Paume; Sharjah Art Foundation; Swiss Institute; and Rizzoli, among others.

I'm also an adjunct professor of English; I'm currently teaching composition at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, so you can be sure I'm knowledgeable, patient, and highly professional.

If you're working on a book with numerous texts (rough or partial drafts), I'm eager to help. Maybe you need your first draft looked at, and help pinning an idea down, or your second, fleshing it out. Maybe you just need a copy edit or a proofread. I have extensive experience in all of this, and take a creative, collaborative approach.

I've had the pleasure of editing texts by prestigious artists, curators, academics, entrepreneurs, and writers alike. And when I say texts, I really mean it all: forewords, prefaces, acknowledgments, copy, interviews, conversations, walkthroughs, and more substantial, academic essays. This includes developmental edits, line edits, copy edits, and proofreads.

For Rizzoli's New York Splendor, for example, I did both developmental and copy edits on all of the author's 120 descriptions of interiors. Consistency in content, tone, and voice were my priority. I'm proud Architectural Record noted its "engaging written reportage," knowing the role I played in it.

I had a similar role for Rizzoli’s Scrawl, which includes descriptions of numerous illustrations as well as a preface and foreword. I had a hand in it all, working closely with both the executive editor and the authors to ensure they were communicating clearly and effectively.

Don’t worry: I’ll keep tweaking until all parties are satisfied.

Authors: I want to stress this point. If you need help tackling any sort of contribution, we’ll do it together. We’ll take your draft, however rough, and make it shine, even if it takes several back-and-forths.

I’m confident in my role. My academic background (I have an MA in History and Archaeology) and experience in the arts allows me to ask the right questions and approach the most nuanced subjects with sensitivity and care. I’m also an author myself with an MFA in Fiction from The New School, so I understand the process.
