Overview

I have decades of editorial experience and have most recently been a non-fiction editor at Quercus (division of Hachette U.K.) for 15 years. Happy to work on fiction and narrative non-fiction titles. As well as desk editorial work, including editorial reports, giving feedback on proposals and outlines, structural editing, copyediting and proofreading, I have experience of dealing with legal issues and, through previous experience working in Rights, I am used to dealing with permissions.

I am sensitive to the needs (and feelings!) of the author. My aim is to provide positive and constructive advice and to work collaboratively. At the end of the edit, you should be confident to present your work to an agent or publisher. Whilst my background is in book publishing, I am also happy to work on shorter pieces of work. I would first read all the material and then get in touch - probably via Zoom or Teams call to suggest a way forward. Sometimes it is more helpful, in the first instance, to produce an Editorial report suggesting broader changes. Or, if this is not preferred or not necessary, I would work directly on the typescript, using Track Changes in Word.
In the case of non-fiction, we would discuss fact-checking and whether that would be part of the editorial work.
