Carolyn Lengel - Editor

Garrison, NY, United States

Development editor for major publisher, style wrangler, grammar geek.

Overview

For over twelve years, I've served as an in-house development editor at a major New York educational publisher. In that role, I work with authors from the initial planning stages of a book or media project through the final publication. I guide authors toward choices that will allow the published product to meet market needs and win customers' hearts. I edit drafts and suggest revisions until the right book emerges from the manuscript, and when that book eventually ends up in teachers' and students' hands, it's likely to have my marketing copy on the back cover.

Although big-picture thinking is part of my expertise, details still matter to me. My work requires intimate familiarity with guidelines of three major documentation styles (MLA, APA, and CMOS). I can help researchers show off all their hard work in error-free notes and references. If the grammar and style choices absolutely, positively have to be perfect, I know how to make them so.

And educational publishing isn't the only world I know; I have served as an independent contractor for various editorial service providers, writing and editing across a wide range of nonfiction genres. Self-help manuals? I can help. Comics that need more zip, pow, oomph? Done, done, and done. True tales of Bollywood? I'll make them dance and sing. Nonfiction may be my day job, but it's also what I read for fun.

October, 2014 – May, 2015 (7 months)

As an independent contractor, I worked on nonfiction manuscripts on subjects ranging from religion and political science to real estate and food safety. For each manuscript, I evaluated and edited the content and created an editorial letter outlining possible future revisions.

I developed top-selling books and digital tools on writing, rhetoric, and style, from traditional handbooks to two editions of the only comic-book composition text.
