Overview

HOW DID I GET MY START? Over the past 25 years, I honed my editing skills working in publishing as a proofreader, copy editor, and editor.

AND WHAT ABOUT MY WRITING AND STORY SKILLS? I developed a keen ear for character and voice and a solid feel for plot and story by studying with Emmy award–winning comedy writers and screenwriters, as well as published authors, both privately and in workshops.

DO I PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS? I developed and co-authored two published narrative non-fiction books. I’ve also co-created and written four TV pilots (our fingers are still crossed while we try to get produced). Also, check out my client recommendations below.

SO... WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? The services I offer include developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. In case you’re not sure which you need: A developmental edit occurs during and/or after the initial creative process of your detailed outline and/or your first draft; the line edit follows the developmental edit after your story manuscript's plot is set and no sooner than after your second or third draft (depending upon your writing skill level); a copy edit is done after the author reviews line edit notes and makes the appropriate changes; and the proofread is the final step and done as a final pass. Since Reedsy doesn't specify the difference between line edits and copy edits, I'll briefly clarify: The job of a line editor is to help you tell a better story; the job of a copyeditor is to make sure the grammar is correct.

D.B. Gilles, screenwriter, playwright, and fiction and non-fiction author including "Writer's Rehab" and "The Pug That Ate Paris"

I can't say enough good things about Carlo DeCarlo. He is a superb editor, both in the areas of line editing and concept editing. I have hired him numerous times, and on each project he made my work better through his insightful notes and suggestions. Whenever I finish something, Carlo is the first person I go to because I know that he has great integrity. He will tell me when something isn't working, and he's always right. Carlo is also an excellent proofreader. I myself am pretty good at proofing, but I know that when Carlo does his take, he will find plenty of things that I missed. Please consider this an ENTHUSIASTIC recommendation.

Jacqueline Simon Gunn, fiction and non-fiction author including the "Close Enough to Kill" series

I’m delighted to give my strongest unqualified recommendation on behalf of Carlo DeCarlo as a freelance writer and editor. We first worked together when we co-authored "Bare: Psychotherapy Stripped," a non-fiction case study book chronicling my experiences as a clinical psychologist. Originally, Carlo was meant to edit the book, but his early notes prompted me to ask him to step in as co-author. In doing major rewrites, he taught me how to be a better writer. Reading his rewrites helped me understand the fundamentals of writing — showing instead of telling, sentence structure and flow, grammatical liberties, plot through-lines. Carlo has been the most influential person in my development as a writer. When I started writing fiction, I asked him to be my editor. He has edited all my novels, as well as some of my blogs and pitches. I am awed by his talent in story development, characterization, dialogue; sometimes he just moves a few words around and it changes the whole feel of the scene for the better. He has helped me more than I had ever expected. As I continue to evolve as a writer, he has continued to offer guidance.

Most important, Carlo is a pleasure to work with. He is creative, committed, diligent, intelligent, and has a great sense of humor. He is also an avid reader and always seems to know something about whatever topic comes up in conversation — or my writing — from current events, to film and television, to sciences, to cultural trends. Carlo is dedicated, responsible, personable, and talented. I am certain that you would enjoy working with him.

Jason Dias, author of "Finding Life on Mars" and the "Because of Her Shadow" series

Carlo DeCarlo assisted me with my novel, "Finding Life on Mars." I asked him for some developmental edits, and he provided very useful assistance with plot points, character development, and pacing. Carlo tuned in right away to what I wanted to accomplish with the story, applying his years of experience to the problems. This book is now my best seller thanks to his timely input.

He works fast, delivers what he promises, and wants his customers to succeed.

Jacquetta Szathmari, performer, writer and podcast host of "Hey, You Know It"

I have worked in editing, marketing, and copy writing for almost two decades, and I wish I had met Carlo DeCarlo earlier in my career. After recognizing the quality of his screenwriting, I hired him as a freelance editor while I was EIC of a health and wellness site with thousands of pages of messaging and content. Not only was he instrumental in helping us to craft our brand message, his writing also gave us a template on which to sell our marketing via storytelling services to clients. He is peerless as both an editor and a proofreader and works quickly with minimal supervision; he gets it right the first time. Outside of that arena, I have also used Carlo’s editing and plot conceptualization services to polish a screenplay, which resulted in the sale of the completed work, as well as to produce several pilots in various television genres. He has always been generous with constructive feedback on the work I have brought to the stage, and I value his attention to detail and his ability to help me as a writer to bring out my voice. Over the past decade, I have recommended him for numerous projects as an editor, collaborator, and author, and I continue to do so without reservation based on his output. In addition, he is also a lovely person to work with. As a critic, he is fair; and as a writer, he is skilled. If you engage him, he will write it!

Katie Kazimir, performer, podcast host of "Hey, You Know It," and screenwriter

I hired Carlo to work as an editor and story development consultant on a screenplay I was working on, and I was thrilled with the end result. Because he is a master storyteller, he helped me see past and eliminate stale and unnecessary choices throughout the text and suggest options that enhanced character growth and improved the flow of the storyline. In addition, he is an excellent proofreader and knows everything about formatting, so I walked away with a perfectly polished script. Carlo is a true professional who approaches his work with sensitivity, kindness, and enthusiasm. And he has a terrific sense of humor that not only adds to the quality of his work, but makes him a pleasure to work with. I do continue to consult with Carlo on a variety of projects and find his insights to be invaluable.
