Patrice Caldwell

Patrice Caldwell – Editor

Literary agent and book editor with 10+ years of experience editing and developing queries, proposals, and manuscripts with an eye to sell.

Overview

After a few years as an editor at Scholastic and then Disney, I left in-house editorial to live in Paris (I speak & read some French!) and freelance edit for individuals, book packagers, and serialized fiction companies. Now, I work as a Senior Literary Agent at a NYC-based literary agency representing a diverse list of clients. Though different, each of these roles strengthened my knowledge of the book market and sharpened my ability to cultivate talent.

I'm also an author, and so I’ve been in your shoes. Receiving a ten page edit letter after just turning in the book of your dreams? Soul crushing. While I can't promise you'll never receive a long edit letter, don't worry, we'll work through it together. I give feedback that’s direct while inspiring. If something’s not working, I also highlight what is. I’ll teach you how to play to your strengths while improving what needs work. I tailor my approach to your project, your goals, and your preferred way of receiving feedback. I work across all ages and genres, but especially love editing While I have experience editing YA and adult non-fiction, YA or adult contemporary romance, and fantasy (MG through adult). As such, world building and developing characters and romantic pairings that immediately pull a reader in are strengths of mine. (side note: let's talk tropes! I love grumpy sunshine, fake dating, enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, and only one bed—what about you?).

I have the skills to meet and exceed your expectations. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to see how we can work together!

Oh, and random aside, I'm a total cat mom and foster fail. I started out with one kitty during the pandemic (I grew up with dogs!). Then of course I went back for another. And then randomly four years later, I decided to foster a "singleton" kitty... she never left and so I now have three cats (& my partner says I'm not allowed to go into animal shelters anymore LOL.) Do you have pets? Tell me about them, too!

Work experience

Howard Morhaim Literary Agency, New Leaf Literary & Media (current)

Jun, 2019 — Present

I have been a literary agent (at two well-known agencies) since June 2019, representing, developing, editing fiction and non-fiction across all ages (including several unannounced adult romantic fantasy titles). Because of my training and experience as an editor, I work intensely with my clients to ensure their projects stand out on submission.

I have successfully sold books at auctions as high as seven figures; my clients are New York Times (including a #1 NYT best seller) and USA Today best sellers, award winners, and debuts at the beginning of their career.

Self-employed

Jan, 2013 — Present

Freelance developmental editor and line editor and story coach for various publishers, writers, and book packagers. For example, I acquired Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim when I was an editor at Disney and, after I left, they brought me on to freelance edit the sequel, Ravenge the Dark.

I also was a story editor for Radish, a serialized fiction company and edited one of their most popular stories. As such, I am experienced with different types of storytelling and editorial timelines.

Disney Book Group / Disney-Hyperion

Jun, 2017 — Dec, 2018 (over 1 year)

Acquired several titles across middle grade and young adult categories (novels, graphic novels, fiction and nonfiction) including working with authors to develop and assess stories for Rick Riordan Presents (I worked on Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, it was an instant NYT best seller, and the author is now my client)

Spearheaded the republication of Sharon G. Flake’s novels and the publication & editing of a bind up of V. E. Schwab’s The Archived series, with the inclusion of a short story never before in print.

Scholastic

Apr, 2016 — Jun, 2017 (about 1 year)

Worked on a range of commercial, best selling chapter books, middle grade, and young adult novels.

The first book I acquired, The Serpent's Secret, was an instant NYT best seller as well as The Bad Guys, a chapter book series I worked on, and Ghost Squad, a MG novel I developed and edited.
