Briana Farr

Briana Farr – Editor

A developmental and copy editor with a decade of editorial experience. I have a keen eye for what makes a good fiction story flow well.

Overview

I have been a professional editor for almost a decade, with experience in technical editing as well as commercial publishing. With a master's degree in publishing from The George Washington University and my time spent as an Acquisitions Editor, I am knowledgeable of the publishing industry's editorial processes and needs. Fiction is my main area of expertise, but I have also worked on nonfiction, autobiographies, children's books, and cookbooks and enjoyed them all.

All stages of editing are important, from developmental editing to proofreading, and I can help with them all. I have a keen eye for what a book needs, and I aim to provide feedback in a helpful and encouraging way to help an author progress in their writing. I love helping make an author's dreams come true more than anything, and would be thrilled to help you!

Personally I am a big nerd that loves science fiction and fantasy, has a super cute kid and an awesome husband, and thinks bookmarks are for quitters. I love the book process, and miss working directly in publishing something fierce. However, where we lived at the time only had small publishers I could work for, and after having my first child, I had to get back to the company I tech edit for as a matter of survival for my family. Freelance editing helps connect me back to the kind of editing I love to do so much. Thank you for your consideration!

Author Reviews:

"I have developed a sincere respect for her role as my editor, as she was always there to take my call, answer my questions, and return emails promptly. Honestly, if I owned a publishing house she would be my first candidate. Any group or association would be privileged to have her represent their organization with her honesty and integrity. I would wholeheartedly recommend Briana to any publisher looking for top talent." - Dennis Schleicher, Literary Agent, author of Is He Nuts?

"Briana worked with me for more than a year as the editor of my high fantasy novel. I found her to be highly competent and pleasant to work with. She was fully invested in helping improve my story. Her feedback and suggested edits were well-considered and always brought greater depth and polish to the story. Her input was indispensable, and I wish I could retain her services permanently." - Arden Emil, author of Heritage of Loss.

Work experience

Cedar Fort Publishing and Media

Oct, 2017 — Oct, 2018 (about 1 year)

Responsible for bringing at least 27 new titles to the company each year and managing them through all production, design, and editorial processes. These spanned a variety of genres, including the following: national and religious nonfiction, national and religious fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, home improvement/decor, and self-help.

Booz Allen Hamilton

Nov, 2012 — Present

With exception to the year I took a break from Booz Allen to work for a publishing company after completing my master's, I have been a technical editor for Booz Allen for most of the last 7+ years. I oversee all publishing-related requirements, including editing, tagging (SGML authoring), and Quality Assurance (QA). Not only do I lead the team on requirements for technical manuals, but I am the go-to source for high-pressure editorial jobs including contracts, proposals, and more. It is challenging editorial work, though not as fun as working with books and authors directly.

Briana was excellent to work with. She was professional, thorough, and on-time. She did a wonderful job editing and provided insights that helped me make my novel more readable. I highly recommend her work, and hope I have the opportunity of working with her in the future.

I wasn't overly impressed with the editing Briana did. There were many times when I felt as though she didn't read parts or entire chapters. For example, she had asked a question that had been explained two paragraphs before. There were many instances similar to that, and there were a lot of places where no comment or editing was even done, which, again, led me to believe she didn't read my piece.
