Overview

BOOK COACH! I can help you with editorial services that meet you where you are and help you get to the next level.

Nonfiction author, cultural historian, and biographer, I've written 15 books and edited 19, as well as acquired, doctored, and taught writers how to write another 35+ books. My doctorate is in American literature and Master's in American History, but I specialize in trade books and storytelling. I've also ghostwritten books, especially for business executives and leaders.

I acquired and edited (including marketing copy) for five separate book series for Rowman & Littlefield. Focused on helping scholars and academics reach general or trade markets. Partner from idea and concept creation through publication. I also taught at the college level for 16.5 years, so I am deeply experienced in helping new writers produce the best work they can.

My "BIG" ideas:

-- The story is the thing, but you've got to connect with an audience.
-- Make the work authentic.
-- Writing well frequently boils down to concise, precise, and active voice.

At R&L, I acquired books in American literature, television, sports, film, and a cool series called "The 100 Greatest..." I specialize in American culture and history, writing about John Updike and The Great Gatsby to NASCAR and Stan Lee.

I also founded and edited the Popular Culture Studies Journal and served on the editorial board of several academic journals and magazines. I've written hundreds of articles and essays for popular sites like PopMatters, Time, and newspapers and magazines.

From writers/editors I've worked with in the past:

"I credit Bob with everything—I don’t know if I would have done any of it without him. As his record of productivity attests, Bob gets things done—a lot of things."

This is my first experience with an editor; I really didn't know what to expect. I'm impressed and amazed at the quantity and quality of feedback I received from Bob, and very grateful. Bob was generous with his many encouraging comments. And spot on with knowing what parts needed some work. His suggestions for how to improve them were thorough and clear.
