Bethany Robison

Bethany Robison – Editor

Former Assistant Editor @ Entangled. I'd love to help with your YA/romance project, especially if it includes magic, history, or sports.

Overview

My experience centers around young adult fiction and romance. So far, I've assisted on two complete trilogies and one duology, tracking consistency in plot, character, voice, and world building between books. I've also evaluated hundreds of query letters with an eye for acquisition and would be happy to help authors perfect their pitches.

When I edit a full manuscript, I make a lot of in-document comments, letting the author know how I think readers will experience and interpret their story. I like to pose a lot of questions in hopes of pushing the author to uncover those little details that transport a reader and deepen the emotional experience. I also like to call out the elements that make an author's voice special, encouraging them to lean into those things for maximum impact.

I've assisted in editing more than fifteen published books and two published novellas, including a USA Today Bestseller, a RITA award finalist, three Amazon bestsellers, and one Kirkus starred review.

If you have concerns about your budget, please talk to me about it. We can work something out.

Work experience

Entangled Publishing

Mar, 2015 — Aug, 2018 (over 3 years)

Evaluated query letters and full manuscripts submitted by agents and unagented authors for potential acquisition. For acquired manuscripts, contributed to developmental edits, including notes on story structure, voice, tone, pacing, setting, character development, and plot. Also contributed to line edits, including detailed checks for consistency within the story and voice, limited fact checking, confirming flow of prose, and trimming unneeded words.

Bethany was fantastic. She gave me exactly the kind of feedback I needed, and pointed out things I didn't even realize myself. She was really intuitive and seemed to connect with my novel. She was flexible and easy to talk to, I didn't feel awkward or uncomfortable if I needed to ask questions. I would recommend her to anyone.

Bethany has been amazing to work with. I only hesitated to write a review because I want to keep her all to myself. :) :) She brought thoughtful ideas and suggestions that pushed me to improve my book overall. She also highlighted the parts that worked well, which is helpful for me to understand what I should keep doing.

This was my first time hiring a professional editor and Bethany exceeded my expectations! Her prices were reasonable, her response time was quick, and her comments and evaluation were thorough, thoughtful, and empathetic. She was not harsh, but she told the truth! I would highly recommend Bethany to anyone looking to get a new, informed, professional perspective on their manuscript.
