Andrew Forrester

Andrew Forrester – Editor

A careful, insightful editor with experience and expertise in fiction (literary, contemporary, and YA), memoir, and personal growth.

Overview

"Andrew's editorial assessment was extremely thoughtful. He engaged with my novel draft on the scene and sentence level while never losing sight of the project as a whole, noting simple typos and raising big picture questions with clarity and precision."
- Sean Adams, author of THE HEAP (HarperCollins)

"Andrew is an encouraging writing coach and an expert editor. He is patient and insightful. He is quick with turnaround and always professional. I am so grateful for him!"

– Susie Davis, author of DEAR DAUGHTERS (Abingdon)

I am an editor and writing coach who has provided editing services for books that have gone onto be published by HarperCollins, Abingdon Press, and elsewhere. A fan of literary fiction, mysteries, and young adult and middle grade fiction, I have worked in everything from speculative fiction to memoir to Christian inspiration. I also love reading query letters. I wrote so many of them before I figured out what works, and now I have the agent to prove it. (Hint: do not use the first line of your letter to make a joke about how you're a nobody with no experience. It's not as cute as I thought it was in 2015. But you probably already knew that.)

Wherever you find yourself in your project, I am happy to offer my services. And as a sensitive writerly person myself, I promise to be really, really nice in my comments. (You're doing great! Also this paragraph doesn't make sense. But you're doing really great!!!)

Additionally, I am a writer with publications in Parents Magazine and McSweeney's, among other places, and my second YA novel is currently on submission. I have a PhD in English Literature and teach high school English and Creative Writing in Austin, where I live with my wife and kids.

Work experience

Self-Employed

Aug, 2019 — Present

I provide individual coaching to clients who are in the process of either writing or editing their own manuscripts. This is full-service work, covering everything from brainstorming to developmental edits to line editing to query letter and proposal coaching.

The Fedd Agency

Oct, 2018 — Present

I freelance for the Fedd Agency, offering substantive and line edits for full-length manuscripts that tend to fall into the categories of Christian inspiration, memoir, self-help, or devotional. For the Fedd Agency, I have written editorial letters and style guides and worked closely with their creative director.

St. Andrew's Episcopal School

Aug, 2021 — Present

I teach creative writing in all its forms: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, and so on.

The Friedrich Agency

Jan, 2018 — May, 2018 (4 months)

I worked closely with one of their former agents, Kent Wolf, helping make decisions on his slush pile and providing line edits and editorial letters for newly signed clients. In this short time, I provided edits for two books that went on to be published by HarperCollins.
