Andrea Ramsay – Editor

Author, editor, and former book publicist here! I do developmental editing for nonfiction books, helping improve structure, tone, and flow.

Overview

Greetings, writers! So glad you found my profile. My name is Andrea, and I specialize in substantive and developmental editing for nonfiction books. After working in-house for five years at HarperCollins Christian, I ventured out on my own in 2014. Since then, I’ve edited a number of books and even wrote one of my own. I understand the importance of a good, kind editor who doesn’t forget to point out the strengths of your manuscript as well as the weaknesses.

Here's what my editing process looks like:

-First read-through: I read through your entire manuscript, making as few notes as possible. The first read-through is for me to immerse myself in your work and get a feel for the big picture.

-Second read-through and edits: This is when I dive into the nitty gritty. I mark up your manuscript with every big-picture edit, thought, and idea I can think of.

-Editing my edits: On the third read, I go through my own edits. Do I still agree with myself? Yes? No? Even editors need to be edited!

-Editorial letter: I summarize my detailed edits into one letter to help you digest the strengths, weaknesses, and tweaks that can be worked out to make your book the best it can be.

If this sounds helpful to you, I’d love to work together.

*Please note: Before we work together, I will want to set up a call and see your full manuscript.

Why the call? This is to ensure I understand exactly what you need from an editor and whether I would be the right fit. This can be communicated much more clearly and efficiently in a 30-minute phone call.

Why the full manuscript? Sometimes, a manuscript requires a "manuscript review" before undergoing a full developmental edit. This is when I believe the author needs to spend more time writing before I begin editing. I provide general notes on the book to guide you as you rework the manuscript. This service is less expensive than a dev edit, and it's often needed for first-time writers. I've found that if I start the dev edit too soon, it's a disservice to you. I can only determine what level of editing you need if I have the full manuscript.

Andrea gave me relevant responses and estimations. She also gave me helpful advice and professional recommendations. My writing is really hard because I am not a native English speaker, and I have complicated ideas that are not easy to understand. However, she knows what I want to say and can cor...
