Ali Ardington – Designer

Hi, I’m Ali. I am a designer and illustrator with twenty years experience in childrens publishing, four of which I was Art Director leading the creative charge. I’ve been privileged to have worked across the many genres of publishing, covering fiction, non-fiction, picture books, board books, novelty and licensing. And with each genre requiring its own set of skills and approach, my ability to diversify and adapt is evident in the covers and internals I create. Two of my covers were picked up by the Bookseller - cover design of the month and Zoella’s book club, which was incredibly exciting.

I love books, have done since I was a little girl, so working in publishing is a dream come true! I throw my all into any project and strive to think out of the box creatively, and produce a visually exciting piece of work, that is market savvy, inventive and in partnership with the text. I generally read all manuscripts if available, as it nurtures the creative development and helps me as a designer connect with the author, characters and overall direction of the book.

Connecting and working with a designer can be a daunting affair, but rest assured my approach is centred around communication, honesty, respect and support. I embrace a very organic way of working, and involve the client as little or as much as they require. I like to nurture a safe and happy environment, so very soon into the working relationship, the client would understand that no question or idea is ever silly. I’m transparent and clear in regards to fees and budgets which I’m always happy to discuss.
