Overview
With over 35 years of experience, I'm a graphic designer specializing in book interiors. My clients range from self-published authors to major publishing houses, including McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press, and Penguin. I have designed books across every genre, from novels and memoirs to complex academic and medical textbooks.
My expertise extends beyond design to a deep, practical understanding of the entire publishing lifecycle. Having served as an in-house consultant for Courier Corporation, one of the nation's largest book printers, I possess an expert knowledge of book production and manufacturing. This unique insight allows me to design books that are not only visually compelling but are also engineered for a smooth and efficient printing process.
A highlight of my career includes the complete redesign of McGraw-Hill's Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, the world’s most widely used medical textbook. I led the design for the 17th edition and continued the partnership for two subsequent editions over a 15-year period, a testament to the lasting relationships I build with my clients.
Praise from Satisfied Clients:
“Alan Barnett is a Design God…. Most graphic designers help things look good. Alan turns material into an evocative, emotional experience…. I can't recommend him highly enough.” —Stever Robbins, Co-founder at Stever Robbins, Inc.
“Alan is an incredibly talented designer, innovator, and visionary, with the skills, expertise, and reliability that has made his business one of the leading boutique design firms in NYC. Having worked with Alan on various creative projects at NYU—including, arts magazines, brochures, and as a consultant for layout design/graphics—his work has become a model for the university's print materials.” —Annie Cofone McLaughlin, Master Scholars Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
“Alan brings to his work a flexibility and level of cooperation that never involves any diva-like artist tantrums. His willingness to collaborate with clients on ideas…is refreshing, as is his total lack of drama, despite last-minute schedule changes. These are delightful additions to his complete artistry…. We plan on working with him again in the near future.”—Jay Blotcher, Principal at Public Impact Media Consultants.
“Alan is truly one of my favorite people to work with. Great design sense, of course, but also a great knack for grasping the business objectives of a project. Plus, he has the connections to always find the best resources to fit a project's budget.” —Andrew Schulkind, Digital Stratetic and Web Developer at Andigo New Media.
