Tim Mudie

Tim Mudie – Editor

Since I began working as a professional editor since 2009, I've edited everything from memoirs to serial killer thrillers to hiking guides.

Overview

I began my publishing career as an editorial assistant for cookbooks and field guides, but soon moved to more general interest titles, building a list focused primarily on mysteries and thrillers. Since 2019, I've been at Appalachian Mountain Club Books, where I edit hiking and paddling guides, nature titles, and outdoors memoirs. Books that I've edited have gone on to be international bestsellers and sold hundreds of thousands of copies. I've also professionally published numerous science fiction and fantasy short stories, and I read widely in that genre.

As a writer myself, I understand how personal and important an author's work is, and I always strive to bring out the best of that work while maintaining the author's unique voice and perspective. I enjoy working with authors on both big picture developmental editing and line editing. For developmental editing, I will point out questions I have and things that aren't working and will both offer suggestions and discuss potential revisions with the author. Line editing for me can sometimes shade into something more like copyediting, but I primarily focus on clarity and word choice. And I have no problem when an author chooses to ignore my edits!

Tim's edits have been great. A trim here and there, a suggested explanation for a term, reminders to keep one POV in a chapter or scene. When you read your own work, you know what it means. A second set of eyes catches lapses, and Tim's eyes are great for ensuring continuity, logic and simplicity Since I spent 32 years in government (ie, the Department of Redundancy Department), Tim's advice o...
