Overview

A former writer-editor for Time-Life Books, I taught composition, technical writing, and linguistics at Howard University and directed its Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Program for nearly 25 years. Having earned an M.A. in African American Literature and a Ph.D. in English Education, I have published empirical studies in scholarly journals, historical essays in Time-Life Books, an academic book for teachers, and a literary anthology for college students. I have also copy-edited historical novels and edited manuscripts about science to make them comprehensible and engaging for the public.

My publishing experience, academic training, and years of teaching have taught me how to collaborate with authors and bring out the best in their work. As I have done with my students for years, I will help you clarify your purpose, ideas, and organization in the early stages of composing. Depending upon your preference, I will pose questions face-to-face online or insert comments in your draft. Then, drawing upon my training in linguistics, I will not only proofread your manuscript meticulously but also explain WHY I have changed your phrasing. In other words, because I am a veteran teacher, I want to empower you to become a better writer--even if it means you won't need my services again!

The Friends of Freedom is a fictionalized historical novel based on true events and inspired by the heroism of a remarkable inter-faith and multi-racial group of men and women. The story begins in antebellum Philadelphia when the city was a hotbed for the abolitionist movement and a major crossroads for the Underground Railroad. The novel's main characters were real life "free persons of color... read more

Teresa is truly operating in her gift! She is an educator to her core, exceeding deadlines and expectations. I’m walking away from our time together wiser and more confident than ever. It is her keen eye, attention to detail and ability to draw out of me exactly what my manuscript needed that I am most grateful for. Add to that her wealth of knowledge specific to my audience, unrivaled professi...

Working with Teresa Redd was an encouraging and learning experience. I would classify her as a "teaching" editor, and I know that my ability to craft a story is greatly improved based on her guidance. Her feedback detailing weaknesses and pointing out strengths has helped make my story more robust and appealing. She meets promised deadlines (even beats them) and provides clear, concise direc...

You Make Me Brave Book
I really enjoyed working with Teresa. And I have become a better writer. As a result. She has very thorough and it shows up in the results. I highly recommend her to other authors, especially those who want to be better themselves and not merely have a better product.

Working with Ms. Redd has been refreshing and helpful to my quest to develop my manuscript. She is very detailed, asking the author questions regarding their intent, their expectations, and their motivation for the entire work and even specific sentences in the piece, She is unequivocal and detailed regarding the collaboration process but also quite flexible. She is easy to talk to and enco...
