Kristen Tate

Kristen Tate – Editor

PhD-trained editor helping experienced fiction writers elevate their craft with kind, insightful feedback and strategic guidance

Overview

With a decade of full-time editing experience and a PhD in English from Columbia University, I specialize in helping experienced fiction writers explore new narrative territory and expand their storytelling capabilities. My background in literary analysis and publishing history, combined with my ongoing study of contemporary bestsellers, gives me unique insight into what makes fiction resonate with readers. I've published books, appeared on podcasts including The Creative Penn, and spoken at conferences like the San Francisco Writers Conference on topics ranging from narrative structure to the evolution of genre fiction.

Whether you need big-picture developmental guidance or detailed line editing, I tailor my approach to fit your goals and needs. I can help you with targeted feedback on an outline or your first chapters, deliver a comprehensive manuscript evaluation or style audit, or guide you through the entire process from rough draft to finished book. My editing philosophy centers on clarity, honesty, and respect—I always strive to offer the kind and careful truth. I'll identify what's already working in your manuscript while offering specific, actionable suggestions for strengthening the elements that need attention. As a former teacher, I bring an educational approach to my editing work, so you'll walk away not just with a stronger manuscript, but also with new skills you can apply to all your future writing projects.

Larger projects start with a free short sample edit so we can both be sure I'm the right fit for your work, and all projects include follow-up support and/or revision reviews, depending on the project.

Work experience

Self-employed

Mar, 2015 — Present
I've been freelancing full time for a decade now, during which time I've worked on nearly 500 books, editing over 24 million words. I've worked with both traditionally published and self-published authors in a range of genres on nearly every aspect of the writing and publishing process, including coaching, query edits, proposals, developmental editing, line and copy editing, proofreading, formatting, and marketing support. Almost two-thirds of the authors I work with every year are returning clients, including several who've trusted me with their work for years, book after book.

Chronicle Books

Jan, 2013 — May, 2013 (5 months)
My time at Chronicle Books taught me the standards and processes of traditional publishing. The managing editing department shepherds books through every stage of production, making sure that editorial standards are applied and deadlines are kept. In particular, I was trained in how to proofread and check changes for a wide range of publications—including art books, cookbooks, and children’s books—at late stages of production. I also had the opportunity to sit in on production, editorial, and marketing meetings, which taught me a great deal about how the business side of publishing works.

Columbia University

Sep, 2001 — May, 2004 (over 2 years)
I developed and taught undergraduate writing courses that engaged students and helped them become effective communicators at the college level and beyond. I learned how to deliver kind and actionable feedback that students could understand and apply.
