Steve Watson

Steve Watson – Editor

Bestselling, award-winning novelist offering selective, high-level developmental guidance on psychologically driven fiction.

Overview

I’m a bestselling novelist with a background in clinical science. I work with writers who suspect their book should be working — but isn’t.

The problem is rarely prose. Almost always, it’s structure: the emotional logic beneath the plot. I specialise in diagnosing those underlying faults and helping authors reshape manuscripts so tension, character, and meaning finally align.

I’m drawn to complex projects — fractured timelines, unreliable narrators, moral ambiguity — stories where something essential is misfiring beneath the surface.

I work selectively and at depth. I don’t offer reassurance. I offer clarity. If that’s what you’re looking for, we may be a good fit.

Recent clients include Hattie Williams, author of Bitter Sweet, who secured a traditional publishing deal following our work together.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2022 — Present
Alongside my work as a novelist, I have worked privately with a small number of authors on early-stage and mid-draft manuscripts, offering high-level structural and opening-chapter guidance. This work has focused on: Diagnosing why a novel’s opening was not landing with sufficient force, clarity, or emotional traction Re-shaping first chapters to sharpen narrative promise, tension, and psychological stakes Identifying underlying structural issues affecting pacing, causality, and reader alignment Offering targeted guidance on character motivation, memory, unreliability, and moral ambiguity Clarifying the emotional logic of scenes rather than line-by-line cosmetic edits The emphasis in all cases was on deep craft rather than surface polish: helping writers understand what their story was actually doing beneath the plot, and how to make that underlying structure work more coherently and powerfully. This was selective, bespoke work rather than volume editing, and typically involved intensive diagnostic feedback rather than ongoing copy or line editing.
