Sorrel Pitts

Sorrel Pitts – Editor

I am a conscientious editor with 25 years' experience of working in the publishing industry. My clients include PRH and Harper Collins.

Overview

Professional development editor in trade-fiction and ELT publishing

I have 25 years' experience working in the publishing industry working in-house as Commissioning Editor for Macmillan Publishers and Editorial Manager for Oxford University Press. Now freelance, my clients have included Penguin Random House (PRH), Harper Collins, Oxford University Press, York Press, Magic Cat and Cengage.

I have an MA in Publishing.

I have had two novels published and have been represented under contract by three top literary agents (Sheil Land, Curtis Brown and David Higham).

I offer manuscript assessment, development and line editing, project management, curation and self/traditional and digital publishing advisory services (including how to market your book both traditionally and digitially).

I am highly organised and clear sighted about how to achieve my goals with a long track record of delivering high-quality manuscripts on time. I have edited numerous adaptations of (and have also adapted myself) best-selliing novels, biographies and factual works for adults and children. I am also (I like to think!) easy going, adaptable and fun to work with.

TESTIMONIALS

"I have known Sorrel for over four years, in her capacity as series editor, editor and author. She has proved herself invaluable in her contributions to two flagship series – Ladybird Readers and Penguin Readers – both of which she was instrumental in setting up. Sorrel is consistent in delivering manuscripts of the highest quality, to schedule. Particularly impressive has been her work with high profile brands such as Peppa Pig and Roald Dahl, and bestselling authors from Lee Child to Bernardine Evaristo, and she can be trusted to treat content with sensitivity and creativity. As a team member, Sorrel is never less than professional, reliable, and a pleasure to work with. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Sorrel for future work."

Ann Sandham, Commissioning Editor, Penguin Random House UK

Sorrel grew as a senior editor/commissioning editor over the years I worked with her. Her passion for good writing was highlighted by her choice of authors and her selection of titles to be retold. She worked incredibly well with authors, editors and designers. She was creative, conceiving of new projects and series as well as having an eye for detail always delivering high quality content. She worked across children, teen, young adult and adult titles. She also had commercial acumen for publishing for different markets. I have no hesitation recommending her.

Emily Rosser, Publisher/Publishing Director, Macmillan Publishers, 2006-2013

"Sorrel edited four titles for me during 2022-23. She worked with the author to develop and polish his core text into high-quality manuscripts that were delivered on time and will be published this year. Sorrel is a pleasure to work with and has vast publishing experience which will be invaluable to any novice author. I highly recommend her as both as an editor and a writer."

Work experience

Self-employed

Oct, 2013 — Present

I am presently Series Editor for Penguin-Random House's Ladybird and Penguin Readers, published for the international ELT market. Both series include original contemporary fiction by well-known authors, classic fiction and factual works (including biography, human interest and business titles). As well as adapting or editing many of the titles myself (I have included some of the titles I have worked on below), I oversee and have final responsibility for all editorial for the series.

In addition to my work for PRH and other trade and ELT publishers, I have recently been working with a number of individual authors, helping them to hone their manuscripts in preparation for submission to publishers, or self-publication, giving editorial feedback and hands-on development work, as well as advice on publishing and marketing matters.

Oxford University Press

Jul, 2011 — Jul, 2013 (about 2 years)

Overall responsibility for all Oxford Graded Readers series (Bookworms, Dominoes, Read and Discover, Classic Tales and Dolphins) as well as conceptualising and publishing 'Read and Imagine,' a major 7-level primary Readers scheme with print and digital components. Commissioned War Horse, William and Kate, Eat, Pray, Love, Les Miserbles and The Great Gatsby.

Macmillan Publishers

Feb, 2001 — Jul, 2011 (over 10 years)

Ongoing commissioning of the Macmillan Readers series. Successes included Slumdog Millionaire, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Touching the Void, One Day, The Ghost and Michael Jackson as well as a wide range of classic titles.

Carried out content editing and manuscript development on numerous titles.

Sorrel took the time to understand my project. She worked quickly and thoroughly, maintained good communication, and was constructive in her criticism. Her life experience and professional experiences were a plus for this project. If I decide to take her advice someday and turn this story into a collection, I would request her collaboration again.

Thank you so much for this great review, Emily. I really enjoyed working with you on your story and hope we will work together again in the future.

I have given 5 stars throughout but in truth I have nothing to compare so it is perhaps best if I simply detail my experience with Sorrel. I have never written anything for potential public consumption and the content of my proposed classic is complex enough that the approach and style were far from clear. Sorrel's insights enabled me to arrive at a very firm approach now subject to legal cons...

Working with Sorrel has been a delight, and she has helped me immensely! She is friendly, eager to help, and very knowledgeable. She carries out the work you want to be done efficiently and effectively, adding extra information that might be useful to you and going above and beyond to make sure you are supported in the next step of your project. I would be pleased to work with Sorrel again.
