Renée Camus

Renée Camus – Editor

I’m a writer, editor, and pop culture junkie with a strong background in dance and music. Former acquisitions editor at Scarecrow Press.

Overview

I’m a writer, editor, and proofreader in Los Angeles, California. I have a strong background in dance and musical theatre, and I’m obsessive about pop culture, especially movies and television. In my position as acquisitions editor for the scholarly publisher Scarecrow Press, a division of Rowman & Littlefield, I worked with authors and oversaw publication of more than 200 music, dance, and popular culture titles. In 2012, I moved from politics-centered Washington D.C. to entertainment-focused Los Angeles and received a journalism certificate from UCLA-Extension. I’ve published articles and essays in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine, LA Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, New York Observer, and The Toast, among others. I recently published a chapter on “Joss Whedon and the Geek Musical” in the Routledge Companion to the Contemporary Stage Musical.

I love encouraging writers and building supportive communities, as is evident in the women and gender nonbinary writers group I founded, the San Gabriel Valley Women Writers. I love working with authors to find solutions to their problems, using the tools in my arsenal: good grammar and concise word choice, organizing a flowing narrative and hitting important plot points (yes, even in nonfiction), understanding language and breaking down complex ideas, and a strong attention to detail. I am kind and honest, and I create a good rapport with my authors.
