Kendall Davis

Kendall Davis – Ghostwriter

Non-fiction ghostwriter specializing in memoir, lifestyle, gift books, and pop culture. Author of Be More Captain Marvel (DK Books, 2023).

Overview

I am a ghostwriter and collaborator. I specialize in ghostwriting memoirs, lifestyle books, pop culture/entertainment books, history books, narrative non-fiction, humor, essay collections, and gift books. Both my own work and my ghostwritten work has been published by a Big 5 publisher. I've also worked extensively with hybrid publishers and self-published authors.

I worked for Penguin Random House from 2012 to 2018 editing fiction and non-fiction as well as creating and writing original gift book products, including the best-selling adult coloring book Whatever Is Lovely. Since leaving PRH, I started my own writing and editing business after years of freelancing on the side.

I believe everyone has a story to tell, and I work hard to help you craft a compelling, empowering story from your ideas and experiences. I create a tailor-made writing process for each project, and I view our time together as a partnership as we collaborate to help share your story. I work hard to understand fully your story and to emulate your voice in a way that makes your book feel authentic and real. The genres I specialize in are memoir, lifestyle, entertainment, pop culture, gift books, inspirational, motivational, humor, narrative non-fiction, and essay.

My own writing has been published on outlets like Nerdist, HelloGiggles, Hypable, Geek & Sundry, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, MyWedding, The Mary Sue, and more. I also have an officially licensed Marvel book called Be More Captain Marvel published by DK Books in July of 2023. Additionally, I'm an experienced ghostwriter and collaborator on memoirs and entertainment/lifestyle books from individuals with powerful stories, international speakers, celebrities, and social media influencers. I can't wait to partner with you to bring your story to life!

A note on fees: I charge $50,000 for a memoir up to 65,000 words.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2012 — Present

My company is a content editing and content creation company. I have been freelance editing and writing since 2012. I work directly with authors, agents, and publishers to create, curate, and edit content for books, websites, marketing copy, and everything in between. I have worked on religious books, fantasy novels, memoir, science fiction, romance, and self-help. Additionally, I ghostwrite and help create gift books.

Petful

Dec, 2016 — Aug, 2017 (8 months)

I plan out the editorial vision for the site, and I partner with my writers to help them both hone their skills while also writing to the voice and vision of Petful. I also do basic editing and formatting on posts, while managing the editorial calendar. I'm also partnering with a colleague to help grow the site's social media presence, and have helped them launch an Instagram.

Legendary LLC (Nerdist, Geek & Sundry, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls)

Feb, 2015 — Dec, 2019 (almost 5 years)

I write articles that skew towards entertainment, feminism, "geek culture" (sci-fi, fantasy, comic-con, etc), pop culture, science, and technology. All articles are written in a voice that matches the individual outlet's brand, and represents the company culture and identity.

Penguin Random House

Jul, 2012 — Jan, 2018 (over 5 years)

I acquired and developed authors and content, as well as line edit manuscripts. Additionally, I keep an eye on the market for areas that are currently underserved or overserved in our imprints and pursue authors and topics according to what I find. I ghost-wrote a few books for higher profile authors, and worked on a team that developed unique products created in-house like adult coloring books and journals. I also ghost wrote several of those books as well.

As a first-time author, Kendall was pitch-perfect. Her attention to detail, her focus on the story, and the changes needed were constructive. She was exactly what I needed, and my story is better because of her expertise, knowledge, and ability to help me understand everything. Grateful I selected her and thankful she was a part of my novel writing journey!
