Kailee Kremer

Kailee Kremer – Editor

Conscientious copyeditor and proofreader. Formerly on staff at University of Chicago Press; freelance clients include Penguin Random House.

Overview

I began my career at a small press in Irvine, California. Having lived only in Southern California, I decided in 2008 to move to Chicago, where I encountered exactly the same question from roughly one thousand people: "Why did you leave THERE . . . to move HERE?" The answer that satisfied most people was my job at the University of Chicago Press ("I wanted to see what winter was all about" didn't really convince them). At the Press, where I worked for nearly five years, I developed the editorial skills and sensibilities that have become the foundation of my career. I edited and proofread scholarly book manuscripts and galleys and had the opportunity to work on The Chicago Manual of Style itself (I copyedited the bibliography of the sixteenth edition).

Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of creating respectful and productive relationships with authors. I believe in the adage, “First do no harm,” as it applies to editing. I recognize that the author is the authority on his or her subject. I use editorial suggestions to bring clarity where it is needed—not to add my own embellishment. That said, I enjoy the puzzle of fixing a grammatical dangler or a misplaced modifier, and adjusting punctuation or phrasing to bring the author's meaning into focus. I appreciate the clarity and simplicity of good writing, and I enjoy the process of helping an author’s work shine.
