Julie Blattberg

Julie Blattberg – Editor

Seasoned copyeditor and proofreader, supporting authors of high-quality fiction and nonfiction. (Helping authors look good since 1993).

Overview

Whether you're working with a literary agent, looking for representation, collaborating with a publisher, or going out on your own, I can help you fine-tune your manuscript as I've done for hundreds of professional authors. Aside from mastery of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, I'll ensure your work avoids echoes and repetition, and can perform fact-checking where needed. In addition to providing top-notch copy editing services, you'll receive a style sheet for reference, and I'd be happy to provide you with useful keywords to enhance your metadata and descriptive copy. If it's a proofread that you need, I'm well-versed in best practices for typesetting, and will be sure to point out any inaccuracies or issues with your near-final product.

In my roles as Managing Editor at Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and Disney Publishing, I've worked with award-winning and New York Times bestselling authors of literary and genre fiction, various nonfiction subjects, and books for children, tweens, and teens, and managed teams of production editors who specialize in developing high-quality and ready-to-market content.

As a freelance copyeditor and proofreader, I've been commissioned by Random House, Hyperion, HarperCollins, Harper, HarperTeen, HarperCollins Children's Books, Harry N. Abrams, Razorbill, Rodale, and others. You'll see some of the books I've worked on as a contractor in my Reedsy gallery.

How may I help you?

* I listen for and maintain your voice in the work.
* Pick up on inconsistencies, echoes, and word repetitions that naturally arise in prose.
* Clean up any spelling, punctuation, and grammar issues that might distract your readers.
* Perform fact-checking to ensure that your manuscript is as strong as it can be.
* Highlight suggestions for you to consider that may improve your finished book.
* Provide useful keywords and industry-specific BISAC codes for your project's positioning and metadata.

Oct, 2013 — May, 2017 (over 3 years)

In addition to running editorial and marketing operations, I successfully launched and managed Worth Books -- a short-form nonfiction imprint at Open Road. Not only did this require overseeing staff line editors and developing relationships with freelance writers, I performed a great deal of developmental editing on select manuscripts, and proofread each and every file before approving for release. As with every editorial role in my career, I hold each work to the highest standards of quality.

On the backend of publishing operations, I successfully executed on a catalog-wide review of BISAC subject codes, to ensure the greatest possible discoverability of books and authors; and commissioned, edited, or wrote hundreds of pieces of web-friendly descriptive copy.

HarperCollins Publishers

Mar, 2007 — Sep, 2013 (over 6 years)

A a senior member of the marketing team at HarperCollins Publishers, my accomplishments included running all of the corporate-branded social media channels, from content conception to creation to execution for Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and BuzzFeed*. (Articles I published on behalf of HarperCollins garnered more than 1,000,000 page views and led the industry to focus on the platform for awareness of books and authors.)

I was also instrumental in disseminating best practices for metadata for editors and marketers throughout the company, commissioned, edited, or wrote hundreds of pieces of web-optimized descriptive copy for frontlist and backlist releases.

In support of the Avon team, I provided bespoke coaching to their community of romance authors in social media and website optimization, and represented the corporate marketing team at various conferences.

Overseeing managing editorial for Disney Publishing Worldwide included leading a team of production editors responsible for the copyediting and proofreading of Disney-branded books for kids of all ages (picture books, middle grade, young adult, and coffee table books), managing global publishing schedules for global book releases, and the production of books for trade imprints for Hyperion Books for Young Readers.

HarperCollins Children's Books

Nov, 1999 — Nov, 2004 (about 5 years)

As Managing Editor, I was responsible for publishing all hardcovers and novelty formats, including board books, picture books, middle grade, young adult, and specialty items, such as books packaged with crayons or baby booties or audio elements. In this role, I supervised a team of full-time and freelance resources dedicated to producing works of fiction and nonfiction of the highest quality, for mass market and trade channels.

Paperbacks for the Star Trek imprint, as well as popular series for teens and tweens (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Nancy Drew) also fell under my aegis.

HarperCollins Publishers, HarperPaperbacks and HarperPrism

Jun, 1993 — Oct, 1997 (over 4 years)

In this managing editorial role, I worked with editors in the HarperMonogram imprint to produce contemporary, historical, and paranormal romance; the HarperPrism team who published science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, and pop culture, and the HarperPaperbacks group who focused on other mass market subjects such as mystery, thriller, true crime, western fiction, and women's fiction.

Julie's professionalism is truly on another level. Julie performed copy editing for my novel and prior to this, I had already worked with a professional development editor. The details Julie caught were astounding and were missed not only by my editor but also by at least 20 readers who sampled the novel. I only regret that I had not found Julie earlier as I can only imagine how much stronger m...

Julie did an excellent job line editing my manuscript. She offered a different perspective than the copy editor I initially worked with and was also wonderful. Her price seemed fair and her work was thorough, and punctual. Her ideas usually fit in perfectly with my writing style and she usually picked up on most of my sardonic humor. She was also very candid and honest about my project and was ...
