Heather Schroder

Heather Schroder – Editor

Developmental editor for NYTimes bestselling authors with over 25 years experience in professional trade publishing.

Overview

I am a NYT bestselling developmental editor and agent with over 25 years in professional trade publishing where I have worked with numerous authors to turn their book ideas into published realities. I specialize in both literary and commercial fiction as well as narrative nonfiction, history, food, wellness, business and memoir. For the majority of my career, I have been a literary agent, where I have launched numerous bestsellers, including the iconic Sex and The City, The Disaster Artist and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I've also worked to build brands from the ground up, including Food52 and What Would Virginia Woolf Do? In addition, many of my projects have been turned into successful television series and feature films, including the international bestseller, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind and Billy Lynn's Long Half-Time Walk.

With my training as an agent, I have a highly developed sense of how to shape ideas and material into salable manuscripts and proposals, and I know what makes a project shine for book editors and for readers. I have devoted my professional life to helping authors find their voice and their audience and I genuinely love the process of shaping a piece of writing to make it the best it can be.

I was really nervous about hiring someone over the internet, and "investing" in my draft, but I am really glad I went with my gut. Heather read my draft so closely, I felt like she really understood my characters and objective. She did a chapter breakdown as well as overall summaries of character and plot, and made multiple specific recommendations that I plan to take. I now have a really...

Heather's feedback was invaluable. She heard my voice and understood what I was trying to convey through my story and gave wonderful suggestions on how to get there. I am hard at work on my second draft and I know that Heather's feedback will help make my novel a success.

I consider myself fortunate to have entrusted my manuscript to Heather’s expert and insightful guidance. As part of her meticulous editorial process she first summarized, then wrote comprehensive feedback for each chapter. She then focused her recommendations in six key areas, highlighting recurring threads for growth and refinement. I am energized by Heather’s suggestions and grateful that she...

Heather didn't just read my manuscript; she knew my manuscript. She knew the characters, she knew the plot points, she knew the high points and low points. She made incredible suggestions as to how I could improve character development and pare unnecessary elements that clouded up the story. She made a list of every character in my manuscript (something I didn't do), and boy, I have too many of...
