Filipa Namorado – Designer

A freelance illustrator passionate about love stories and children's literature

Overview

I'm a freelance illustrator based in Coimbra, Portugal with a background in graphic design and work experience in book illustration and design for animation, having recently worked as the lead illustrator for Cuida Bem de Mim, a 12-episode animated series about positive parenting for the National Commission for the Promotion of the Rights and the Protection of Children and Young People.

I'm passionate about LGBTQIA+ projects that allow me to draw on my unique perspective on gender, sexuality and love, having written and illustrated "Meninos, Meninas e nas Entrelinhas", a picture book about gender diversity, and recently wrapped two projects for Jessica Kingsley Publishers on this topic: "The Gender Deck", a card set that aims to facilitate conversations about gender, and "Gender Heroes", a picture book about gender trailblazers from past and present.

In terms of style, I approach my digital work with a traditional art sensibility, making use of painterly textures, bold shapes and vibrant colours to create a playful, mid-century modern feel. Inspired by vintage children's books, shoujo manga and old fashion magazines, I explore retro aesthetics through a contemporary lens, channeling my passion for narrative fiction by weaving storytelling into illustration.

Filipa is a great artist and so easy to work with. She was very clear about her work and always asked questions to make sure she was doing what we wanted. She did a book cover, and the artist was thrilled with the final art. I can't wait to work with her again!
