Overview

I'm an illustrator who has been living and working in Edinburgh for many years. My training was in graphic design and I bring a bold, graphic approach to each project. I strive for an immediacy in my work through a confident fluidity of line and careful, colourful composition.
I have been the sole illustrator on six hardbacks from BBC Books, and I'm a regular contributor to Panini publications.

Work experience

Freelance Illustrator

Self-employed
December, 1993 – Present (over 29 years)

I’m a freelance illustrator with 29 years experience working for many major UK newspapers and magazines, design and ad agencies, and I’ve designed over 200 greetings cards.
Since 2004 I've worked regularly for the BBC's Doctor Who range, illustrating for their two magazines and six of their books. 'Whographica', a hardback book of Doctor Who infographics, which I designed as well as illustrated, was published in September 2016. October 2020 sees the release of ‘The Monster Vault’, for which I illustrated the cover.
2020 also sees the release of ‘A Kind of Magic’, a hardback from Polaris Publishing that goes behind the scenes of the original Highlander movie. I designed the cover and provided internal illustrations.
Since 2011 I've designed Europops, Eurovision minipops that are popular with fans and have been used by various national broadcasters onscreen and in their promotional material in the run up to the song contest each year.
Since 2016 I have also been been developing and growing my own online store - a range of gifts depicting famous cityscapes.

Ben is a true professional in every sense! He is the first book designer I've ever worked with--and I may never need another one, haha. Even before I hired him, his willingness to listen to my ideas and to share his thoughts about my project were beyond helpful. We worked together across time zones (EST/GMT) and never had a single issue in communication. If his wonderfully unique, detailed grap...
