Alexandra Hess

Alexandra Hess – Editor

Editor interested in literary horror and crime novels with publicity experience. I have worked at Random House and Skyhorse.

Overview

I am a New York-based publishing professional with editorial and publicity experience. I have worked in the publicity department at Penguin Random House and have worked as an editor at Skyhorse Publishing and Sterling Publishing. My tastes tend towards speculative fiction, literary horror, and crime novels. I am particularly drawn to novels with eccentric and out-of-the-box approaches the the narrative form and have a particular respect for prose over plot. I delight in unlikeable and unreliable narrators, absurdist humor, and atmospheric prose. That being said, I am also drawn towards more commercial novels with topical and unique premises.

My editorial approach is focused on isolating the various themes that shine through an author's novel and ensuring that plot lines and character development strengthen and support the overarching message of the narrative. I strongly believe in preserving an author's individual voice and understand the editorial process as a collaboration where the author's vision for their work takes the lead.

"Alexandra Hess acquired and edited my debut novel, The Hummingbirds (2018), for Skyhorse Publishing. I could not have asked for a better editor to work with. She is incredibly sharp and provided invaluable feedback on my manuscript, from global concerns to line edits. In communications, she was always upbeat, prompt, and encouraging."--Ross McMeekin, author of The Hummingbirds

"Alex is one of those rare editors who understands how to encourage, critique, cajole and help a writer improve their work without crushing their spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her -- her sense of humor, professionalism and enthusiasm for the book kept me going. As a writer, you dream about working with an editor like Alex. I highly recommend her as an editor (and very much hope to work with her again)!"--Terri Favro, author of Generation Robot (a Booklist starred review title)

"Alex was a total pro and wonderful to work with! I found her warm and friendly on a personal basis, and responsive and responsible when it came to requests. Regarding her editorial notes, Alex's feedback was encouraging and constructive. Her specific suggestions were insightful and spot-on--implementing the changes she recommended has greatly improved my manuscript. I highly recommend Alex, as both a talented editor and an all-around competent professional!"--Lindsey Palmer, author of Otherwise Engaged
