It's a strange thing to review a classic. I've started reading lots of Agatha Christie lately, and her style is surprisingly diverse. Here, she is in her classic whodunit mode. The characters are not complex, but deftly and delightfully drawn. The plot unfolds almost like a mosaic being laid, switching between the perspectives of the ten victims / suspects as they try to figure out who is the murderer before the next death occurs. And this dimension, that the suspects are also potential victims, adds tension. Last night, I watched one of the Knives Out movies, Glass Onion, and enjoyed all the nods to this book in the plot, which is clearly derivative. This premise has laid the foundation for countless movies and other novels and is now a timeworn cliche -- strangers gathered under mysterious conditions in a wealthy host's mansion, or in this case remote island, where one by one they are bumped off. I'm not sure Christie was the first to concoct this recipe, but she can certainly be credited with making it world-famous. A fun, fast, and clever read. (less)

A marvelous fantasy in the old tradition of taking-your-time to make the reader care. Novik's writing is confident and measured, her characterization subtle, and her world well-researched and compelling. The star of the book is the dragon -- and the relationship between dragon and rider. Laurence and Temeraire seem to make a complete person together, as it should be in a dragon story. The intimacy of that relationship is beautifully established and developed over the course of the book and is part of what keeps the pages turning. More importantly, it grounds the book and elevates it. I look forward to following their relationship through subsequent books.

𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑎 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒 is out on shelves and available through Reedsy, or through my website, https://juliemathison.com/elena-the-brave/! Continue the adventure with Elena, Vasilisa and Ivan's daughter, and Mitya, the son of a 𝑏𝑜𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑦𝑟 knight in the ancient city of Kiev. It's a difficult time to celebrate the launch of a book based on the 𝑏𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑦 of Kievan Rus. I hope that 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 celebration is one of appreciation for this powerful, rich and unique folkloric heritage -- and the spirit of the Ukrainian people.

My novel BELIEVE has won the 2021 Eric Hoffer Book Award for Best Middle Reader and First Horizon Award for debut books! I can't believe I forgot to share the news here. Do any of my fellow indie authors struggle to stay on top of all the platforms, forums, networks and fill-in-the-blanks that clutter our lives, laugh? For those of you not familiar with it, the Hoffer is one of the largest international awards honoring salient writing and an independent spirit in books produced by independent, academic and small presses. Excited and honored!
