Boredom After seeing a note from a parent who was looking for support with a child who gets bored, I initiated the following conversation with my 11-year-old son. Mom: Do you ever get bored? Son: Yes Mom: Oh! I didn't know. I haven't been hearing about it. Son: (curiously) Why would I tell you? Mom: I don't know. Maybe you want me to help you out with it. Son: Nah! It's just bored. It's no big deal. Soon enough I'm not bored anymore. It's been years since I've heard "I'm bored" from one of my kids. As I recall, my reply was always something like "That's awesome! That means you're about to think of something fun to do. I'm excited!". I even recall the child saying "When will I think of something?", and I would say, "I don't know, just wait for it." The boredom never persisted and my kids didn't become dependent on me or anyone else arranging their world so that they could avoid contrasting feelings. In fact, my kids seem to have a good sense that feelings just come and go, and there's nothing to do about them. Parents can teach this by example, but first, they must be willing to learn it for themselves.

The idea that children need discipline is a reflection of the belief that you need discipline. Most people would agree that such is the truth, but that doesn’t make it true. If you find yourself disciplining yourself or your children, that’s okay! But if you want to use your perception of discipline for restoring sanity, offer a little bit of willingness to see that believing in the sense of anyone needing discipline is an attack on your own sovereignty.
