Must read 🏆

A highly recommended motivational book for children especially for those who love playing basketball and other kinds of sports.

Synopsis

Norm is a young boy who has only one dream, to play in the school basketball team. Unfortunately, bullies have taken away his confidence, until one day something magical happens. Normal Norm is a children's book on self-confidence,believing in one's self, and achieving dreams despite being bullied. The illustrations show the magical Masai Mara in Kenya at its best, exposing the reader to the beauty of Africa.

Normal Norm written by Chad Hayward is a motivational children’s book that will delight kids who love playing sports, especially basketball. It’s a wonderful book about Norm, a boy who dreams of being a good basketball player despite what he considers to be his weakness and the taunts of bullies that challenge his self-confidence.

Will Norm be able to reach his dream and overcome the obstacles he finds along the way?

This book is very helpful to children who wish to accomplish something great but seem to be bound by some limitations they see in themselves. Such limitations may even be aggravated by other people who fail to recognize the strengths each person has.

For such children, a figure like a fairy godmother is someone who could help them realize the magic that could help them overcome their insecurities and doubts. Kids will see how Norm will be helped by his own fairy godmother. They can also be made to think about other people in their lives who could have played the same role of mentor, helper and friend in times when they needed assistance and support.

This is a very educational book. In addition to learning more about basketball, readers can familiarize themselves with the different animals presented in the story. Furthermore, kids will learn the important values of self-confidence, perseverance and courage.

This book contains more words than pictures and may be more suited to older children. But adults can help the younger ones also so that the time spent reading may even become an opportunity for bonding between parents and their children.

I highly recommend this book for children who want to make their dreams come true. This is also recommended for those who love sports and animals. It’s a delightful read that entertains and teaches good values at the same time.

Joel Godiah Olwande - Teacher of Drama/TheatreThoroughly enjoyed reading this book to my 5yr old son. As a Kenyan married to an American, my son enjoyed the links between Africa and the West illustrated by Norm's Kenyan background and reference to Fairy Godmother (which we do not believe in, as Norm aptly says). The best part was seeing my son and my wife guess what animal represented what ability the Fairy Godmother talked about...I say this because the author picked animals that would normally not be associated with that ability i.e. to say a Gazelle is faster than a Cheater sounds out of the norm. But that is the beauty. That metaphor glorifies the main subtext (in my opinion) of this tale. It is a great book that celebrates diversity and inclusion. I highly recommend it to anyone, and specially to third culture kids.
