Historical fiction is my passion. I particularly enjoy writing about the Victorian era because background information is readily available, as in the works of Dickens, for example. Also, I can easily access newspaper articles of the time. I always do my best to make my stories as realistic as possible by including events that actually took place. In this particular book, the foul smell emanating from the River Thames is often remarked upon by the characters. “The Great Stink” they called it! Truth is always so much stranger than fiction.
But other than realistic background details, a good story always needs interesting characters. Especially when it comes to the antagonist. I decided she should be female, and came up with Elizabeth. When readers say how much they hate her, I’m delighted! She really took on a life of her own as the book progressed, and for that reason, I couldn’t bring myself to kill her off at the end. She’s still going in Book 2 (which I’m still working on), so we’ll see where she ends up.
