J.K.F. Sandham's A Tale of the Nine Lands transports readers into a highly detailed world where human and dwarves have long endured oppression from skinny giants and witches. This novel revolves around Theo, a human slave who seeks to rescue his family, Exiluk a keradin experiencing a life-changing quest, and Ash who works within the palace only to discover mysterious powers alongside her thoughts. Sandham’s storytelling is captivating and highly imaginative, interlinking the journeys of the protagonists with their struggles both internally and outside. The world-building is complex and detailed bringing the many elements of the Nine Lands together as one. This novel is praised highly due to the amount of time and effort that has gone into creating an elaborate story that integrates multiple readers with the plot. One reviewer noted, “The Nine Lands are really well built into the book, descriptions enable the reader to visualize the world with ease. The characters develop in-depth throughout each chapter and the story is intriguing leaving the reader ready to step into the next book.” This novel is the first out of many so the future remains open, while many threads are left to be discovered. Fans of epic series such as Dragonlance or Shannara will find the timeframe greatly interesting.

Matt Guzman's "Rieden Reece and the Final Flower" is an engrossing middle-grade science fiction book that skillfully combines mystery, fantasy, and adventure. The story begins soon after the events of the first book in the Rieden Reece series, when thirteen-year-old Rieden "Ri" Reece is thrown into a fresh and dangerous adventure. Ri discovers a terrible conspiracy involving alien shape-shifters who have infiltrated his school and are posing as teachers in the ostensibly peaceful hamlet of Desert Lime. These alien creatures, under the leadership of the mysterious Plague Doctor, represent a grave danger to humankind. In order to keep the world from collapsing into anarchy, Ri must traverse this perilous terrain, distinguishing friend from enemy. AUTHOR MATT GUZMAN Guzman tells captivating and inventive stories. The narrative is infused with witty dialogue, particularly evident in the interactions between Ri and his older brother, Rob. Guzman masterfully blends action-packed passages with times of introspection, allowing for character development and deeper thematic inquiry. The addition of novel aspects, such as a bee with a doctorate in quantum theory and a juvenile slave work force commanded by cockroaches, displays the author's infinite ingenuity. To sum up, middle-grade readers and young adults who appreciate science fiction, fantasy, and adventure will find "Rieden Reece and the Final Flower" to be a great read. Guzman's clever storyline, as well as his incisive humor and captivating writing. In the words of one critic, "It crackles with energy, radiating wit and warmth like heat from a blast furnace."
