I really enjoyed this story. It brings together so many satisfying elements, from a bad-a** female ancestor who fought a a Confederate soldier in the American Civil War to a Scottish and Irish relations, to slave owners, and Mexican ancestors. Elle dreams of all these ancestors, and the confusion of her dreams adds to her internal conflict. She is just starting out as a writer and compelled to do something more with her writing than simple children's books. Her dip into her family history leads her on a wild journey. And yes, there is even a little romance. Tom Shachtman has blended his lifetime of writing experience into this book.

I think the unsuspecting reader will be getting way more than he or she expects with this book. It's a chaotic, intelligent, read, with stories that'll keep you thinking long after you finish reading them the first time. You'll need two copies because you'll wear the first one out going back to stuff you want to quote.

Poignant words linger, shared memories haunt, sadness, and joy co-mingle; truth lays out, opened, garden to the forest, the heart of a home.

If you are a fan of classical Greek literature, you're going to love The Memoir of the Minotaur! Yes, there's some blood, and some sex, but it isn't too graphic. You don't need to know the stories it draws from to enjoy it, but if you do know them, you'll discover quite a few laugh out loud moments.
