I read Hummer when it first came out 30 years ago, and am re-reading it again now. I was only 13 when I read it the first time, and am loving it just as much at 43 years old as I did then. Linda does a great job characterizing Hummer as a young girl who is embarrassed of her living situation. Hummer tells lies to hide what is happening with her mom, and after living through an abusive situation that I often tried to hide behind lies with my own mother, I can relate well to Hummer. The love of horses is another similarity between Hummer and myself, and Linda clearly knows how to write about horses. I highly recommend this book to any age group, and am so glad to be reading it again.
