This review is biased and unfair. To call a person's life unremarkable is hurtful and totally incomprehensible. Everyone's life is eventful and remarkable and important to each of us. This review is biased and while I have had some negative reviews which I have accepted as neutral criticisms, this one offers no such bearing, I would like this review to be withdrawn. Please see her own Grandson's review of her memoir The style of writing was rather uninteresting and unemotional, as well as being in dire need of an editor. Having read through the novel in a single night I feel it very apt to state that my grandmother had the experience but indeed missed the meaning. This is the story of a woman with almost zero agency in her own life, dedicated to portraying herself as a victim in all aspects. My particular favorite moment of the book was when she described living in a household with me and my father, a venture that would ultimately result in failure and a subsequent move to New Mexico. What she does not state in this book is that she left when I refused to speak with her or interact with her after she declared my transgender partner's gender identity to be "a fantasy, not grounded in the real world". This deeply hurt me, and the rest of our family, as my grandmother loved to play the tireless Democrat and champion of social justice. Perhaps she was not racist, vastly owing to her upbringing traveling the world, but undoubtedly she remains a bigot as it pertains to the LGBT cause. For a woman who fell in love with education it is almost humorous to watch as she flails in an attempt to cling to the social norms of her dying generation, never once attempting to change her point of view and reconnect with her grandchildren. Numerous falsehoods abide in this narcissistic tale, particularly as it relates to the struggles of my mother and father and the upbringing my sister and I went through. To my grandmother's credit, this novel served as an excellent illustration into her early life and offered an explanation as to how she became the unfortunate woman she is to this day. Never one to stand up for herself, she failed to break the cycle of abuse and disdain perpetuated by her elder sister and parents, which has carried repercussions down multiple generations. In conclusion, this is not a novel worth reading. This says it all doesn't it?
