Still trudging through "A Blade So Black." Hit chapter 8, and am finally starting to take an interest. I have to say, this has been a hard one to get through. This type of story isn't my thing, but I have mad respect for PoC authors carving a path in the fantasy . sci-fi genre, and will support the work by at least purchasing it and giving it my best.

@joycelicorish4616 the reviewer is right about the tenses. This is something I STRUGGLED with, but my editor has helped me immensely. That being said, it does not warrant a comment on the entire book. If you only read the first page, you're only reviewing the first page. Your example above proves the tense changes. It starts off as present tense; the breeze whips his hair, he approaches a bridge, etc. You then switch to past tense with this sentence: "He leaned against the railings of the makeshift bridge and looked over at the rippling lagoon below." If that were to be present tense, I believe it should read, "Leaning against the railing of the makeshift bridge, he looked over at the rippling lagoon below. (Is happening now.) Past tense should read, "He leaned against the railing of the makeshift bridge and looked over at the lagoon that rippled below." (Everything has already happened.) I hope this helps to understand the review that @belindamessengersike wrote above, and will help you in your writing endeavours.

About me
Helping to bring black women and PoC to the forefront of the fantasy genre. Representation is lacking, and only recently has a black person or person of colour been readily accepted as an MC in the genre. The past hasn't looked so great for us. Here's to a MAGICAL future!
