Many boys and girls who live in cities have little or no knowledge of horses or other animals, so the story provides them with a worth-while information about animal life. Alma B. Caldwell wrote this at the end of the introduction. Black Beauty's tale was laid out so wonderfully for the readers to indulge and appreciate. As it is an autobiography of a horse, I'd say that Black Beauty will be a favorite of ours, not only did he felt real but, his journey is something anyone could relate to. During my time reading it, I couldn't help myself continue, not daring to put it down and set it aside as it made me guess; 'would he be alright? Would he feel at home?' and just like us, he'll meet friends who'll probably stay, leave and come back, may it be man or beast. I wouldn't ask for any other ending though I would like to know if he had, later in his life, met a mare and had foals of his own but, I think that Anna Sewell had already left it to our imagination.
Black Beauty's set in Victorian England, a time when horses were crucial since they were the main mode of transportation for humans. The story starts at the beginning with beauty's birth, raised by his mother under the kind care of a farmer as he learns from a young age that humans can either be a horse's greatest ally or their worst enemy. Beauty spends the early part of his life with thoughtful, caring people who know how to keep horses healthy and happy, but he is always aware that others aren't so lucky.
This story may have been first published in 1877 but it will never grow old for it is a tale where one can find himself in the shoes - horse shoes rather - of beauty because in every line holds a meaning where, at some point in our lives, we'll be able to understand because finally, we've been there. This may have been a story of a horse but his tale cannot be more humane, and that was all because Anna Sewell hoped to influence people to show kindness to animals and to create a sympathy for them as well as for human beings. With all that said, you might as well start now, if you haven't and if you already did, well, you could just find yourself coming back for another take on his life.
