The inspiration behind Debunked came from two things, actually: 1. having watched several of the competition series popular on television, such as "Ink Master", "Forged in Fire" and "Cupcake Wars". My daughter and I often watch these kind of shows together and afterward think up other types of talents we feel would make for an interesting challenge show. 2. I've always been fascinated by reading about real people throughout history who have allegedly possessed psychic abilities. Some of these people were certainly charlatans and notoriously took advantage of others. Yet, others seemed to have something else going on for them, whether their abilities came from a higher power or simply that they were in tune with faculties beyond the five ordinary human senses. While the scientific world tends to dismiss psychic abilities out of hand, there does seem to be a continuing battle between cold scientific assumption and the possibility there is more in this universe than can be neatly rationalized or explained away as hoax or superstition. So, my fondness for challenge series came together with the interest in psychics, and soon the premise of a fictional story was born.
