"Transference" by Ian Patterson is a strong contender in the dystopian science fiction realm and describes a world wherein the rich may transfer their maladies to the poor and thereby create a chasm separating the healthy wealthy from the sickly poor. It follows Nicholas Five borough's, a "Sicko" who acquires others' diseases for a fee. Nicholas, however, is motivated in a way that none of them can understand: he means to destroy the corrupt system from within. Having survived the worst of diseases, Nicholas finally attempts to turn the status quo on its head and change his identity to gain acceptance into the society he is trying to infiltrate. The world-building in Patterson's capacity is heavy with darkness and foreboding in society, where technology is a tool of oppression rather than liberation. The idea of disease transference is scrutinized thoroughly, birthing ethical questions regarding the exploitation of poor sick people, with health being seen as a commodity. The author describes this subversive world and uses horrid images so that the readers can almost easily picture the vivid contrast between the worlds of the rich and the poor. Character development is another stronghold of this novel. Nicholas can be seen as a morally conflicting protagonist, who seeks justice yet is crippled by his own weaknesses. His development is riddled with moral issues, especially when he interacts with people from the very class he is trying to undermine. Interactions are complex, lending such richness to the story that it reinforces the notions of human compassion and betrayal. The pacing is then a commanding point: action mounts evenly with quiet, contemplative scenes. The tension builds through Nicholas's descent into the machinations of the elite, with an ending that is completely unexpected yet thought-provoking.
