Review of Grave Mistakes by J.M. Samland Grave Mistakes is a tale of Gabriella, a young woman from the land of Deadvale, which was largely sheltered and living in the fantasy she knew best. Her life is changed forever when, due to uncontrolled magic, she kills a nobleman. Driven by feelings of guilt, Gabriella sets out to find a way to resurrect Brynmor; however, this journey becomes thrilling, full of growth and revelation for Gabriella. The book is basically an investigation into the themes of identity, power, and morality. This book is populated with diverse characters who are totally morally gray. Lastly, the transformations presented in Gabriella and Brynmor are pretty mind-boggling as they deal with the after-results of their actions as well as the complexities of the world around them. What's appealing most about the book is the combination of old fantasy and modern. This can't be merely a correction on Gabriella's part; it is rather discovering power and strength. The character dynamics are totally thought-provoking and worth analyzing in terms of subverting popular fantasy tropes. The arrogance of Brynmor yields a greater understanding of the world, as does Gabriella herself climb from naivety into strength. The best and worst of J.M. Samland is in his writing style. While the prose is the most beautiful description, the realities come alive in such vivid imagery; still, it's just not quite possible to render the dialogue smoothly enough without jarring modern and Victorian-style language mixed in here occasionally, which does take away from how otherwise very immersive the experience here is. The stylistic choice, using a unique blend of archaic and modern language, does portray a somewhat realistic situation of old and young people communicating with each other, yet sometimes results in interruptions to the conversations and natural interactions between characters. Personally, the book drew me in due to its exact understanding of personal accountability and the result of power. The internalized guilt of Gabriella took her on an emotional ride; however, making amends was easily her own true emancipation toward self-empowerment. That said, the book was slow at times, especially in that first third, and a book that is slow at times may indeed turn off the reader. I would recommend Grave Mistakes to readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy with strong themes of growth and morality. The book may sound a bit flawed, but the engaging narrative, complex characters, and intriguing world are enough reasons for it to be read. The Dark Fantasy or fans of morally gray will find this story worthwhile.
