I have another short story I worked on in 2022 that I'd like to share! The Dark can Whisper Aileena Harper I used to have a friend, Dalia. Dalia was a beautiful, sweet young lady. Her hair fell perfectly along her collarbone without her trying. One day, as I was cleaning my workspace up, Dalia approached me with a horrified look on her face that spoke to me. Something was wrong. "I don't know what's going on, Jane," she mumbled. "At night, I hear this... whisper. It started at ten, and I thought nothing of it. Every night the number decreases. But now that it's getting closer and closer to zero, I'm starting to worry." "That's not normal," I told her. "What number is it supposed to be at tonight?" "Four," she replied. I was obviously concerned and had many questions. What would happen when the number reached zero? Her familty took her to see a phsycologist to make sure she wasn't just hallucinating. When the doctor told them nothing seemed to be wrong, the worry sank in. I decided to come over one night. I lay beside her bed, my heart pounding and my phone clutched in my hand ready to call my mom if I heard so much as a squeak. "There," Dalia exclaimed. "You hear that?" She sat up in her bed. "No, I don't," I say. "You're sure it's saying something? What number?" "Two!" Dalia sobbed. "I'm scared, Jane. I don't wanna die." "You're not going to die," I reassured her. "You'll be just fine." At school that Monday, Dalia was very on edge. "It's at one. One, Jane." "It's okay," I said, completely ignoring the fact that I was genuinely horrified. The next day, Dalia didn't come to school. I figured she just fell ill and couldn't attend. So I called her mom. "I thought she'd left for school early today," she explained, "I wasn't aware she wasn't at school." The police were involved. It was ruled a kidnapping. Then it struck me. The night that Dalia went missing would've been the night the thing said zero. So when I went to bed that night and I heard a voice begin whispering the number ten, I didn't hesitate to run away and never return. Since then, I've been living on my own in a hut. And when people walk by and ask if I need assistance, I just tell them no. When people call me, I answer -- but all I say is, "The Dark can Whisper." The Dark can Whisper Aileena Harper
