Family... the relationships closest to us, and yet often they are the most complex.
In "the imperfects" by Amy Meyerson we follow the Miller family as two generations struggle to mend their pasts, while also trying to reconcile with the mysterious history of the two generations of women before them.
But more than just a family saga, the novel has an excellent mystery element. A historic diamond wrapped in intrigue, is discovered after the death of the Miller matriarch in the back of a drawer in her bedroom. Soon after, international legal battles ensues and the Miller kids are thrown into a search for answers as to how the diamond came into their grandmother's possession.
Meyerson is so good at capturing real characters and I think as readers we can recognize similarities to people in our lives. Her characters often struggle with the same "imperfections" we have experienced in our own lives - and that helps us connect to her stories as the reader. I truly appreciate her writing for that. In this novel, Meyerson kept me guising as to how things would unravel right to the end, and in mystery novels that truly is a real 'win.'
I am giving this read a full 5 out of 5 and would recommend this cozy mystery to anyone who loves a good helping of family dysfunction on the side of their puzzle-solving reads.
