Upon returning from Nigeria, Cara’s dad gives her in an enchanted necklace that allows her to go into magical worlds. She goes to the kingdom of Jama’a where she is welcomed as a queen, but – like every queen – she has a responsibility to protect her people and keep them safe, but can she?
The book holds references to iconic figures – which might potentially entice children to ask questions about them and look up to them as powerful examples. The book also highlights how believing in one’s self is the key to achieving anything one desires and that dreams can come true if we work hard enough for them.
The messages could have been more thoroughly explored, and the problem needed more time to feel as pressing as it was portrayed to be, but the book is entertaining enough for the age group it’s targeting.
The art work suits the story very well, bringing the characters and all they represent to life. It also adds an appreciation of diversity.
I recommend this book to any parents or care givers who want to increase their children’s self-confidence by showing them an example of how much it can do and how magical they can always be.
