Based on current world events, see how 20 years have warped the world into a dystopian, corporation led world full of twists and turns...
Pulse is a self-proclaimed "multi-POV dystopian sci-fi horror thriller" and boy oh boy does it deliver. Written by B.A Bellec, the author who brought you Someone's Story, Pulse is a novel full of twists and turns and unexpected revelations that feels eerily self-aware of current world issues. The story is set in 2040, just mere20 years from now, we soon discover that corporations have successfully taken over the world and run all manner of things.
Bellec has written from several points of view & it adds depth to the story. For me, typically, this is not my go-to genre at all. Normally, I don't like multi-POV stories but once in a while, I find an exception. This was it. I think it was just how real some aspects of Pulse felt. I wouldn't be surprised if in 20 years that this mirrors our world. It's rich with descriptions and paints a vivid picture.
In essence, Pulse is the centre of this story. Initially just the name of a company, you soon begin to understand that Pulse has its fingers in a lot of pies. From the internet and communications to schools and research labs, they seem to control quite a bit of the world. They appear to be innovators, creating pieces of technology like the P-7500 personal assistant robots and smart-tech for everyone. Slowly you realise that they have a little too much cash to spare and they can cover up their mistakes and control whoever they want, including the government. Creepy right? Pulse realise they might not be liked by everyone and set out to improve their public image by conceiving 'PulseFest'.
The book itself is not written in a typical format either. Instead, it is more formatted as if it's a script, ready to be pulled from the pages for the screen. There's certainly enough information from Bellec's descriptions. The writing style is the complete opposite of the first book Someone's Story. This for me was a jarring experience, remembering how I devoured it, I was expecting a similar writing style. That being said it was extremely well written and this style works well for the genre. Bellec is an aficionado in creating stories filled with such realism.
I would love to delve more into the story itself but I would hate to reveal anything that would stop the next reader from enjoying it as much as I did. Go cosy up and get lost in one of the darkest, twisted books you'll read for a while...
I'm Beckie, an avid reader, and a creative person. I own my own book business creating sketchbooks and journals by hand - but I love reading too! I wasn't aware of my dyslexia until I was 19 but it has never stopped me from devouring every book I've managed to get my hands on!
Come back later to check for updates.
