Synopsis
Mia Mae happily follows Big Daddy Jim down the path to the Great Mississippi River. It was to be a day of rafting and fishing. Always observant, taking in the beauty of nature, Mia Mae spots a small kitty. Scooping up this newfound friend, Mia Mae names her Dory. Placing Dory gently in her apron pocket, the adventure begins.
Encountering Cougars, Canadian Lynx, and Bobcats, Mia Mae uses her clever thinking, and long hair braid to protect Dory and herself. She will put into practice the important survival skills taught to her by Big Daddy Jim and Mama.
Set in the 1800s, this Tall Tale will have you sitting at the edge of your wooden rocking chair. Hopefully, this story will help you realize the importance of the people in your life who love you. Deep inside your heart, you will see how they have inspired you to be caring, confident, and strong.
This is an exciting tall tale about Mia, an adventurous little girl and her wildcat kitty. Mia is an excellent role model for girls and boys as her character demonstrates a kind heart, a willingness for adventure, an exciting personality and fantastic critical thinking skills. I was also really touched by the sweet relationship between father and daughter!
The main character maybe a female but it is a great book for both boys, girls and adults. This family friendly book, inspires kids to use their imagination as they travel down the Mississippi with Mia. Readers will walk away having learned about wildcats, the great Mississippi and important family values. As a homeschooling Mom, I really appreciated using this book in our tall tale unit, mammal unit, Midwest unit AND nature unit. It really covers so many areas of educational content. The author also has a website that has some great tools to use for homeschooling or in a traditional classroom. My children enjoyed the "How to draw" units the author created with animals from her book. I enjoyed the fact that these drawing lessons could be done independently.
The only negative comment I can leave for the book is that now my daughters are trying to use their braids to lasso trees, bushes and our family dog. Great book, a must have for ALL kid's bookshelves. I will be purchasing this book many times over for gifts! Hope to see more books with the same exciting and quality content in the future!
