Every image was darling, which is not a word I'd commonly use to describe flies or spiders.
Follow Marla the housefly in this story and share her
interesting experiences. Hopefully, she dodges the swat, swerves past the spider’s web and speeds past that pesky lizard. This story may just change your view of the common housefly.
Marla the housefly faces many dangers in Marla, The Fly by Dr. Robert Roper & Mrs. Leonie Roper: flyswatters, flip-flops, spiders, and lizards.
There is danger lurking all around her. However, Marla does find ways to enjoy her buggy life. The illustration of Marla sleeping in the hammock was adorable and funny. Our (mom/daughter) second favorite illustration, created by Lisa Davis, was of the spiders holding buttons like a shield and holding up tiny swords. Every image was darling, which is not a word I'd commonly use to describe flies or spiders.
Besides the delightful story, Dr. Robert Roper & Mrs. Leonie Roper have a page dedicated to "The Parts of a Fly." There's also a "fun fact" about flies.
My daughter loved the story except for one line—"They dine on the guts of a stray cat." We have adoptive cats, so she didn't like the idea of flies making a meal of kitties. There was no image of them actually eating the dead kitty; there was one of a picked-clean cat's skull. She didn't like that either. I know it's a part of nature (circle of life), but she's tiny, so it made her sad.
She understood all the text except for "liquified." I had to explain it, which wasn't too big of a deal.
Besides those few issues, we loved the story. It had a stunning cover, with big, bold lettering and images. The color choices were a perfect blend. They complement each other beautifully.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D

Dr. Robert Roper is a physician for almost 16 years, a husband and a father of one child. The combination of his love for family, poetry, and the birth of his inquisitive daughters, Elliana and Gianna inspired the words etched within. view profile
