Luca and Lucky Adventures - Lost in the Woods by Stephanie Gaston (author) and Katie Crumpton (illustrator) team up again to bring us another adorable book featuring the dynamic duo - Luca and Lucky. As with the first book in the Luca and Lucky Adventures, there's a "Words to Know" section. Some words might prove difficult to pronounce (ominous and bewildered) or define depending on your child's age. There were a few more words I believe the author should've added to the word box and glossary at the end of the book: illuminated and accompany.
While Luca and Lucky Adventures - Lost in the Woods contained a quiz, we never made it to that point. My daughter instead peppered me with questions. Here's a sample of some she asked. "Why is the little boy in the woods alone? Shouldn't an adult be with him? Where's his cell phone? Why didn't he yell for help?" She had some valid questions, but I also reminded her this is all make-believe. Luca and Lucky Adventures - Lost in the Woods did open the door for discussing whether they (my daughter) should ever go off by themself and what they would do if they were lost. It's important to teach children how to be safe in all situations.
Any story that gets my daughter involved, even questioning the plot, is a win, in my opinion. She might've pushed back on a few things, but she was engaged in Luca and Lucky's frightening situation. I love her inquisitive mind!
As I'm constructing my review, I did not see the book on Amazon; therefore, I can't know a recommended reading age. In my opinion, if you go over the meaning of the words, preschoolers could follow along with the story with ease. Reading the words might be a challenge for them, though. I can see first and second graders reading most words by themselves, except for a few.
