Emotions are a universal and expected part of the human experience. While emotions are neither good nor bad, each one feels different and solicits a unique response. When feeling happy, humans smile, cheer or dance; this emotion can be shared with others either directly or through writing or music. Fear or anger are more complex, causing the human body to experience less pleasant feelings. These emotions must be managed differently than happiness when it comes to interactions with other people. Becoming aware of one’s emotions is one important step in human growth and development, and this book helps introduce young readers to the words that describe what they are feeling.
This picture book is designed to be accessible to young children who are beginning to explore the myriad feelings they experience on a daily basis. A female child with fair skin and dark hair is the only human included in the story, and her dynamic facial expressions appropriately depict each of the emotions discussed. Facing her are an assortment of anthropomorphic animals who are behaving in ways that children will easily recognize. Each spread is filled with color and corresponding backgrounds, enhancing the visual appeal of this story for young readers.
A limited amount of text is included and is balanced and repetitive in its structure. Using various colors, fonts, and shapes, young children will enhance their textual awareness as the words are read aloud to them. Though the text could use an additional copy edit, the information presented is useful and appropriate to the target age group and helps children identify and properly navigate the emotions they feel.
